One of the challenges of manufacturing aerogel, especially large pieces of it, is handling. The material is extremely delicate and requires special equipment for handling. One piece of equipment designed in house for this purpose required a high-flow pneumatic manifold with twenty outputs. Due to difficulty sourcing such a component for a reasonable price, it was decided that building one in-house would be best. I designed this custom manifold alongside the team building the pneumatic handling equipment, performed FEA, and fabricated the component myself, saving on significant costs of third-party manufacturing.
